KEEP AN EYE OUT

MANTIS: Want to give your fellow RodzReaders a quick heads up on news you’ve seen — good or bad — that affects the car culture? Just email us your message and photos and we’ll post them after a quick review for accuracy.

Legislation Alerts empowers you to encourage a local governmental environment friendly to our passion for rods and classics.

Product Alerts lets you keep us all up on new innovations as well as products that don’t work as promised.

Speed Trap Alerts aren’t intended to help you break motoring laws, but help you be a conscientious driver before law enforcement do the same thing but with a price tag (penalty) attached. We’re particularly interested in speed traps along the routes that RodzReaders would take to get to a meet or show. We welcome your entries and photos (if you take photos, please be discreet, safe, and do it in such a way that doesn’t interfere with law enforcement operations).

Speed Trap Alert

Town/County/State: Bellevue, King County, Washington State
Speed Trap Location: 150th Avenue SE between Newport Way and the blinking light at 46th St.
Time Patterns: End of the month, morning rush hour, lunchtime, evening rush hour, usually M-F.
Enforcement Method: Out of vehicle handheld radar (standing in the middle of the street)
Level of Aggression: From a single motorcycle officer to a team of up to three officers, e.g., one car and two motorcycles.

My story: As you navigate the bends and hill undulations between the blinking light and Newport Way, the speed limit is just 25 mph even though this is virtually the only major road on and off the multiple neighborhoods south of Eastgate. You practically have to stand on your brakes to keep the momentum of the weight of your vehicle from pushing you to a modest but illegal and ticketable 35 mph. Officers will actually stand out in the middle of the street with their radar pointed at the crest of the hill. By the time you see that, you’re already toast. They nailed me at the same exact spot at the same time of the day two days in a road. Call me stupid but drive a mile in my shoes and see how insane it is to have that speed on that arterial. The people who have bought homes on that road are in denial that they live on a major access road to a whole lot of homes. Oh, and don’t raise the defense of speed trap. The district court judge says told me there is no such thing. Right. Even if 90% of the tickets are issued at the end of a month suggesting that there is an effort to meet revenue expectations. In this case, someone shocked by someone standing in the middle of the road could panic or over correct and be involved in an accident.
